Essential Display Flags Setup Tips for Every Outdoor Event

Display flag guide

Many businesses invest in display flags to attract customers, then lose half the benefit to poor setup. A flag that leans, sags or hides behind an obstacle does little for your branding, while a well-positioned flag display works all day, every day. Outdoor flags provide continuous visibility at a one-time cost, making them a hard working marketing tool for storefronts, restaurants, events and open days.

At All Flags & Signs, we make and install flags for everything from storefronts to major WA venues, and the same basics apply every time. Choose the right flag, set it up properly, put it where it will be seen. If you would rather talk it through, call us or request a quote and we will help you work it out.

Pick the right shape

Choosing the right flag for the job

Not every flag suits every location, so let viewing distance drive the decision: how far away will your customers be, and what must they read? A flag beside your entrance can carry more text than one read from across a car park, and when in doubt, go bigger and simpler.

Teardrop flags

Taut, curved and controlled. Teardrop flags maintain their shape even in gusty conditions, which makes them ideal for exposed sites where a loose flag would flap itself to pieces.

Feather flags

Built for movement. Feather flags attract attention from significant distances, so they suit roadside positions with steady traffic, where the motion does the work of drawing the eye.

Banners

When your message needs more room, banners offer the largest surface area for detailed messaging, with space for special offers, promotions, your website and contact details.

Make it readable

Design basics that get you noticed

Keep it simple, with bold shapes, a clear logo and limited text. One key message per flag works far better than a crowded layout. Use high-contrast colour combinations, such as light text on a dark background, and large sans-serif fonts that stay legible to passing traffic. Drivers only have a second or two, so if your special offers cannot be read at speed, save the detail for banners or your website.

Fabric matters as much as artwork. At All Flags, we print with dye sublimation on polyester that resists UV fading and maintains colour vibrancy under the harsh Australian sun, so your display stays visible and vivid for seasons rather than weeks.

Step by step

Setting up your flag, step by step

A quality teardrop banner can be set up in about a minute once you know the process. We at All Flags follow the same detailed instructions on every install, from shopfronts to stadiums.

  1. Choose your location. Look for flat ground with clear space around it, away from obstacles, and always check overhead before you check ahead. Never assemble or carry a flagpole near power lines, as the poles are long and the risk is real.
  2. Assemble the pole. Push each section together until it locks, making sure every joint is fully seated. Loose components create slack, and slack is what wears out seams and sleeves.
  3. Insert the pole into the sewn flag pocket completely. Pull the fabric down so the sleeve sits smoothly along the full length, then clip the base of the flag to the pole or tie off the bungee cord so the fabric is properly attached and holds its tension.
  4. Fit the base. On grass or soil, hammer the ground stake in deep for stability in high winds, then drop the pole in and lock it. On hard surfaces, use a cross base or plate with a fully filled water or sand ballast. On a fixed flagpole, clip the flag to the rope, pull it to the top and tie the rope off securely at the cleat.
  5. Position for the wind. Flags should be positioned perpendicular to the wind direction so air flows across the face rather than straight into it. This lets the flag fly naturally instead of fighting the breeze, which protects both fabric and hardware.
  6. Step back and inspect. Correct any lean, tighten anything loose, and make sure the full design is visible from the direction your customers approach.

Not sure which flag suits your site?

Tell us about your location and event and the All Flags team will recommend the right flag, size and base, then handle print and installation across Perth and WA.

Location matters

Placement: location, traffic and obstacles

Smart placement can double the return on the same flag. Position your flag display facing the heaviest foot or road traffic, ideally near your entrance so the eye is drawn straight to your door. Keep clear space around it: trees, awnings, parked vehicles and landscaping all block sightlines, and solid structures nearby create turbulence that speeds up wear.

For events, run several matching flags along a fence line or walkway to create a visual rhythm that guides people toward your stand. Consistent branding across your flags, banners and other signage makes the whole environment feel organised and professional, which enhances trust before anyone has spoken to your team.

Built to last

Stability and security

Wind is the biggest threat to any outdoor display, so build stability in from the start. Fill water bases completely, spread cross base arms evenly and lock them, and add extra ballast on exposed sites. In windy locations, a smaller flag will often outlast a larger one. At All Flags, we tell every customer the same thing about storms: remove flags in severe weather, because packing down takes five minutes and a snapped pole does not.

Security matters too if your flags stay out after dark. Lock bases where you can, or simply bring flags in overnight. A flag is easy to carry off, and that is your logo walking away.

Look after them

Care between uses

Look after the fabric and hardware between events and your flags keep earning. Here is what we at All Flags recommend:

  • Inspect grommets, sleeves, cords and pole connections weekly for wear
  • Rotate duplicate flags between events to share the UV load
  • Wash fabric gently in cold water and dry everything fully before packing
  • Store flags rolled, not folded, to prevent creases
  • Wrap poles and fabric separately so nothing rubs or snags in transit
  • Wipe down metal components after coastal use so salt does not eat into the fittings
