How All Flags and Signs printed, finished and installed 2,754m² of grand format Airmesh at Optus Stadium

Client Calcio Italiano 2026
Location Optus Stadium, Burswood
Scope Grand format print and install
Delivered 5 to 11 August 2026

Overview

Bigger. Bolder. Built for sport.

Four of Italy’s most iconic football clubs. One world class stadium. Three banners big enough to be seen from the other side of the ground.

In August 2026, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus and Palermo came to Perth for Calcio Italiano, an Australian exclusive pre-season tournament held at Optus Stadium from 5 to 11 August. All Flags & Signs produced and installed the grand format Airmesh banners that turned the stands into a wall of Italian colour.

Three banners, each 54 metres wide by 17 metres high. Roughly 2,754m² of printed textile between them, or about 2.2 Olympic swimming pools. Every metre of it was printed, finished and prepared in-house at our Maddington factory, then installed by our own crew in front of a full house and an international television audience.

The Client

Calcio Italiano 2026 brings major international sporting events to Australian audiences, in this case an Australian exclusive pre-season tournament featuring AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus and Palermo. Stadium work is home ground for us. We already produce signage and displays for Perth Wildcats, Western Force, Perth Glory and Perth Racing, so a brief built around scale, wind and broadcast was familiar territory. Calcio Italiano simply raised the ceiling on all three.

The Challenge

The brief was easy to say and hard to do. Fill a stadium with colour, and make it hold up on camera. That is a very different job to standard signage, and it ruled out most conventional materials and most suppliers before we started. Every constraint on the project pulled against the others, and the tournament dates could not move.

The Challenge in Detail

Six constraints pulling in different directions

Scale

Three banners at 54,000mm wide by 17,000mm high, roughly 918m² each and around 2,754m² all up. Very few printers in Australia can produce single graphics at this size.

Wind load

A solid banner that big, hanging in an open stadium, behaves like a sail. The material had to let air through it rather than catch it.

Weight and handling

At this scale every extra gram makes the banner harder to move, rig and hang safely inside a live venue.

Broadcast quality

The banners were on camera for the length of the tournament, so colour, contrast and finish had to perform under stadium lighting and on television.

A deadline that could not move

The tournament ran 5 to 11 August 2026. The football was not going to wait for the signage.

Venue constraints

Working inside an operating stadium means restricted access windows, height access requirements and strict safety compliance.

What was at risk

These banners were the main visual statement of an internationally televised tournament. Any slip in production, finishing or install would have been seen by tens of thousands of people in the stands and a global broadcast audience, with no time to reprint at that size. When the spotlight is on, there is no room for compromise.

Objectives

What the project set out to achieve

01

Produce three grand format club banners to specification, approximately 2,754m² of printed Airmesh in total.

02

Select and supply a textile that is air permeable, lightweight and durable enough for stadium use.

03

Hit colour and finish quality that performs on television and in press photography.

04

Complete production, finishing, delivery and installation before the opening match on 5 August 2026.

05

Install safely inside the venue access windows without disrupting the event schedule.

06

Do justice to the identity and heritage of all four clubs.

The Solution

Airmesh, chosen for the venue not the printer

We specified Airmesh, a lightweight textile with an open, breathable structure built for large outdoor and stadium work. It solved the wind problem and the weight problem at the same time without giving up print quality.

Choosing an air permeable textile is a design decision, not a purchasing one. It removed the wind problem before it had a chance to exist.

The Material

Why Airmesh works at stadium scale

Breathability
Open construction lets air flow through the fabric, which takes load off the banner and the fixings.
Lightweight
Practical to handle, rig and install at extraordinary scale.
3D structure
Spacer construction adds depth and resilience.
Durability
Strong synthetic construction suited to demanding event environments.
Visual impact
Premium textile finish that photographs and broadcasts exceptionally well.

The Process

From our print floor to the stadium

01

Art support

Our art team prepared and set up the supplied club artwork for enormous format textile production, including colour management for broadcast conditions.

02

Grand format print

Specialist grand format textile printing produced the Airmesh graphics at full size, in-house.

03

Finishing

Our finishing team completed the printed textiles for stadium installation, including edges and fixing points. It is the industry experience at this stage that gives us the edge.

04

Logistics

Banners this size were packed, handled and transported to the venue in install order.

05

Installation

Our install crew hung the finished banners at Optus Stadium inside the venue access window, ahead of the opening match.

Why All Flags & Signs

One supplier, one plan, no handovers

100% in-house production

Art support, print, finishing and installation all happen under one roof in Maddington. Nothing was handed to a third party printer, so there was no gap between suppliers for a problem to fall into.

Made in WA, for a WA venue

Producing locally kept interstate freight off the critical path on a deadline that could not shift.

Material chosen for the venue

We picked Airmesh because of what the stadium and the broadcast demanded, not because of what was easiest to run through the machine.

One plan, not five jobs

Print, finishing, logistics and install were sequenced together from day one, with more than 100 years of combined signage experience behind the schedule.

From our factory in Perth to the world’s biggest sporting stages.

Timeline

Calcio Italiano 2026 (5 to 11 August)

The tournament dates set the entire schedule, from artwork supplied and signed off, through grand format print, finishing, logistics and delivery to venue. Installation was completed ahead of the opening match on 5 August 2026.

The Result

A stadium turned into a celebration of Italian football

The finished installation turned Optus Stadium into a celebration of Italian football. The banners brought colour, movement and atmosphere across the stands, and gave fans in the venue, press photographers and the television broadcast something impossible to miss. Four iconic clubs. One world class venue. From Perth to the world.

Broader Impact

What the project proved

Proven at stadium scale. Grand format textile work at nearly 1,000m² per graphic can be produced and installed out of Perth, not shipped in from the east coast or overseas.

A reference project for major events, giving All Flags & Signs a credential to take into tenders for other international events, codes and venues.

A process we can repeat. Running production, finishing, logistics and install as one job rather than five is now a proven sequence.

Crew capability. Handling textile at this scale builds practical rigging, handling and install experience that a smaller job simply cannot teach.

Market position. The work reinforces our shift from general signage supplier to specialist major event and stadium signage partner.

Trusted at home. Signage and displays already produced for Perth Wildcats, Western Force, Perth Glory and Perth Racing.

Scalability

Repeatable wherever scale, wind and a fixed date collide

The same approach transfers to any project where the graphic is large, the venue is demanding and the date cannot move.

Sport

AFL, cricket, rugby, A-League, motorsport and international fixtures at stadiums and racetracks.

Events and entertainment

Concerts, festivals, agricultural shows and large public events.

Commercial and industrial

Building wraps, construction hoarding, fence mesh and shade structures where wind load is the deciding factor.

What changes between contexts

The fixing method depends on the structure being hung from. Artwork resolution and colour management shift if the graphic is viewed up close rather than at distance. Permanent or semi permanent installs need a UV and weathering assessment that a one week event does not.

Key Takeaways

At a glance

The single biggest reason it worked: we controlled the whole chain, from art support through print, finishing, logistics and install.

On a fixed deadline with no room to reprint, removing the handovers removed the risk.

Material selection is a design decision, not a purchasing one. Choosing an air permeable textile solved the wind problem before it had a chance to exist.

Without that approach, the work would likely have been split across multiple suppliers or printed interstate, putting freight on the critical path.

That would have left no contingency inside a one week event window.

What this means for your next project: if the graphic is enormous, the venue is difficult and the date is locked in, the supplier who prints, finishes, transports and installs it themselves is the one who can actually guarantee the date.
